"The Rescue", known as "Bonds" in the Japanese version, is the seventy-fourth episode of the Yu-Gi-Oh! anime. It first aired in Japan on September 25, 2001, and in the United States on June 14, 2003.

Major Events[]

Summary[]

The episode opens a Duel between two unknown characters. A driver trying to make his way through the crowd honks and complains. A police officer explains the tournament and asks the motorist to move.

Meanwhile, Kaiba, Yugi, and Mokuba are flying in Kaiba's helicopter, having located the Rare Hunters that have captured Téa and Joey. Kaiba asks Yugi about Marik, but Yugi admits to knowing little about him, other than the fact that he has a Millennium Item. Kaiba brushes off Yugi's "Occult Nonsense". Yugi admonishes him, reminding Kaiba of his first-hand experience with Pegasus' Millennium Eye.

Kaiba visibly reacts to this as Yugi, insists his Millennium Puzzle's powers are real. He reveals his true identity as an ancient pharaoh, much to Kaiba and Mokuba's surprise. Kaiba is again in shock, but recalls what Ishizu told him at the Domino Museum about his ancient past. He and Yugi argue about Ishizu's revelations and Marik's motivation, but come to no resolution.

Yugi reveals the power of Millennium Rod and expresses his concern for his friends, reiterating the need to find them soon. Kaiba is still skeptical about Marik's magic and believes a more rational explanation is more mundane methods of brainwashing through psychology Yugi reminicses about Joey's quest to become a true duelist.

The helicopter approaches the Rare Hunters' hideout as Yugi silently tells Joey to wait for him.

Differences in adaptations[]

  • The flashback to Yugi defeating the Rare Hunter runs differently between versions - in the Japanese version, it simply shows Yugi using "Chain Destruction" to destroy the Rare Hunter's copies of "Exodia The Forbidden One", followed up by Marik possessing him. In the English version, the last two turns of the duel are recapped (starting from the Rare Hunter summoning Exodia's head) before showing Marik possessing him.
  • Cut from the English dub is a small scene before the midway commercial break where Yugi explains to Kaiba and Mokuba that Marik's true objective, aside from obtaining the three God Cards, is to kill the Pharaoh's soul.
  • Kaiba and Yugi's dialogue is much more antagonistic in the dub. While Kaiba is skeptical of magic in both versions, the original portrays him as at least somewhat receptive to the idea, or at least accepts that Yugi believes it is true, and looks for a scientific explanation to the events while in the dub, Kaiba seems to be in complete denial. For example, when Yami Yugi says he's a Pharaoh, Kaiba reacts with "A Pharaoh, you say..." While in the dub, his response is a far more aggressive and dismissive "You're lying!" Furthermore, he accuses Yugi of "trying to corrupt Mokuba with his lies", something the original Kaiba never says. On Yugi's side, he too is written far more agressive in the dub. Angrilly demanding that Kaiba believe him, while the original Yugi is more accepting of Kaiba's skepticism, calmly saying that whether Kaiba chooses to believe or not is his choice.
