"Ultimate Crystal" (Japanese: (きゅう) (きょく) (ほう) (ぎょく) (しん) Kyūkyoku Hōgyokushin lit. "Ultimate Gem God") is a small archetype of Dragon monsters with 4000 ATK and 0 DEF used by Jesse Anderson in the Yu-Gi-Oh! GX anime that support the "Crystal Beast" archetype. It is also a sub-archetype of the "Crystal" archetype. All members of this archetype are LIGHT monsters, except for the DARK "Rainbow Dark Dragon".

With the exception of "Ultimate Crystal Rainbow Dragon Overdrive", all members of this archetype in non-Asian languages do not have the words "Ultimate Crystal" in their names, but instead include archetype conditions specifying that they are members. Prior to the release of Legendary Duelists: Ancient Millennium, all support cards for this archetype instead mentioned "Rainbow Dragon" and "Rainbow Dark Dragon" in their text. With the release of the Fusion Monster "Rainbow Overdragon", all members and support for this archetype received errata to make this archetype clear (except for "Rainbow Path", although it only affects monsters in the Main Deck).

Playing style[]

The "Ultimate Crystal" monsters serve as the boss monsters of the "Crystal Beast" decks, with the cumulative goal of their strategy is to fill the field and/or GY with "Crystal Beast" cards in order to Summon them. However, the "Ultimate Crystal" monsters' inherent difficult Summoning conditions and their limited impact on the field outside of being high ATK beatsticks made them infeasible to utilize for a very long time in the history of the real-life TCG/OCG since their introduction.

Over time, the release of their most recent support cards made the strategy more consistent to fulfill. Alongside the many "Crystal" Spells and Traps that made searching and interacting with "Crystal Beast" monsters more easily, another archetype closely supporting the "Crystal" archetype is "Rainbow Bridge". "Crystal Beast Rainbow Dragon" can Special Summon another "Crystal Beast" monster from the Deck while adding an "Ultimate Crystal" monster from the Deck by banishing itself as a Continuous Spell (placed there either with "Crystal Beast Sapphire Pegasus" or "Crystal Bond"). Having an "Ultimate Crystal" monster in the hand then enables the usage of "Awakening of the Crystal Ultimates" which can either search or mill a "Rainbow Bridge" card or Special Summon a "Crystal Beast" monster from anywhere (except for banished ones). This gave the Main Deck "Ultimate Crystal" monsters utility as an engine piece for enabling the effects of these two cards to be used, which the "Ultimate Crystal" monsters otherwise previously lacked.

Between the current two Main Deck "Ultimate Crystal" monsters, the original "Rainbow Dragon" is far easier to Summon in a dedicated "Crystal Beast" deck since "Rainbow Dark Dragon" requires banishing DARK monsters in the GY (thriving more easily in DARK-centric decks or using "Advanced Dark" in "Crystal Beast" decks) whereas the former did not require any cards to be banished.

After Summoning "Rainbow Dragon", they can then Special Summon "Rainbow Overdragon" by tributing that "Rainbow Dragon", then finally Summoning "Ultimate Crystal Rainbow Dragon Overdrive" by banishing "Rainbow Dragon" and the "Crystal Beast" cards, which can boast up to 11000 ATK. With two high ATK beatsticks, the two "Ultimate Crystal" Fusion Monsters serve as the deck's game closers.
