The names "Twilightsworn" and "Twilightlord" are obviously a pun on the word "twilight" and the archetype "Lightsworn". However this pun only works in the Japanese, Korean and English versions because they use "twilight", an undoubtedly English word. A similar pun also works in the German version, because German, a language closely related to English, has the word for "twilight" constructed in a similar fashion. In all other Romance languages (French, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish) which are largely distinctive from English, there are no equivalent puns, and the name is merely translated to combinations of the words for "twilight" and the names of "Lightsworn".
Visually, the "Twilightsworn" monsters are Dark counterparts of previously released "Lightsworn" monsters, with each member wearing the same clothes as its "Lightsworn" counterpart, with the addition of a black cloak loosely draped over their bodies.

The monsters in the series have unique effects similar in execution to the unique effects of their "Lightsworn" counterparts, with the requirement that a "Lightsworn" monster be banished from the controller's hand or Graveyard as a cost for activation. Members of the series also boast the common effect wherein they send cards from the top of the player's Deck to the Graveyard each time another "Lightsworn" monster's effect is activated, which is a variant on the common self-milling effects possessed by the LIGHT "Lightsworn" monsters. The number of cards a "Twilightsworn" monster's common effect sends from the controller's Deck to the Graveyard is equal to the number of cards sent by its "Lightsworn" counterpart's common effect.
The unique banishing effects of the series are designed to put cards in the player's Banished Zone in order to meet the Summoning condition of its boss monster, "Punishment Dragon", a Dark counterpart to the boss monster of the "Lightsworn" archetype, "Judgment Dragon". In particular, "Punishment Dragon" helps the controller to maintain the longevity of a "Lightsworn" deck in a Duel, by returning all cards, except "Lightsworn" monsters, from the Graveyards and Banished Zones to the Deck, simultaneously allowing the controller the ability to recycle their resources whilst depriving the opponent from using their Graveyard as a resource.
Spell/Trap Cards that support the "Lightsworn" archetype but were introduced alongside the series have the aim of furthering the strategy of banishing "Lightsworn" monsters from the Deck in order to meet the Summoning condition of "Punishment Dragon". In addition, such cards also use card-milling to further supporting the general playing style of the "Lightsworn" archetype as a whole.
