The Shadow Games is the first Yu-Gi-Oh! story arc. It tells the story of Yugi Muto solving the Millennium Puzzle and making new friends. Unbeknown to Yugi, his body now often becomes host to an ancient Egyptian Pharaoh, who challenges bullies and evildoers, who cross Yugi and his friends, to Shadow Games.

Solving the PuzzleEdit

Yugi Mutou is bullied at school by Katsuya Jonouchi and Hiroto Honda. Jonouchi goes as far as secretly taking a piece of Yugi's Millennium Puzzle and throwing it into a body of water. The hall monitor, Ushio, is aware of the hard time Honda and Jonouchi are giving Yugi. He offers Yugi bodyguard protection, but Yugi insists that Honda and Jonouchi are not bullies. Regardless Ushio beats up the two of them and shows Yugi. Yugi tries standing in to stop Ushio attacking them, only to get beaten up himself. Ushio leaves Yugi with a fine of ¥200,000 for his services.

Affected by how Yugi had reacted to Ushio, Jonouchi retrieves the piece of the puzzle he had thrown away and returns it Yugi's grandfather. That night Yugi works on his Millennium Puzzle, making surprisingly much more progress than he's been able to over the last few years. He assembles it, until there is one piece left, the one Jonouchi had thrown away. As he sobs, his Grandfather comes in, giving him the last piece.

After completing the puzzle, Yami Yugi is awakened. Yami Yugi occasionally takes full control of Yugi's body. Yugi is unaware and feels he is suffering memory loss as he has no recollection of anything that happens when Yami takes control.

The night Yugi solved the puzzle, Yami meets Ushio and challenges him to Yugi's first Shadow Game. Ushio attempts to cheat and has a Penalty Game inflicted on him.
