Akaba, Reiji

Reiji Akaba is a main character appearing in the Yu-Gi-Oh! ARC-V manga. He is the head of the Leo Corporation and aims to capture the Entertainment Duelist "Phantom".

Design

Appearance

Reiji is a thin young man with pale skin and grey hair, the front layer being a lighter grey than the back. His hair is arranged in a simple style, flicking upwards at the ends. Reiji's eyes are purple, and he wears red-framed spectacles. His ears are both pierced with black stud earrings. Despite his status as the CEO of the Leo Corporation, Reiji dresses rather casually, wearing a dark-blue sweater, white pants that end just above his ankles, and white shoes (apparently without any socks beneath them), along with a long red scarf wrapped around his shoulders with the ends trailing to the small of his back.

Personality

Unlike his more stoic anime counterpart, he is very emotional and reserved, but he is still a very confident and serious person, especially when it comes to duels, where he is shown to be a no nonsense duelist, as he says to Yuya he has no interest in his Entertainment Dueling. In addition, his personality is much more caring, as demonstrated when Shingo was Dueling Yuto and he showed genuine concern. Unlike his anime counterpart who hates and has a deep grudge on his father this Reiji gets along really well with his father and cares for him deeply.

Etymology

His character's last name,  Akaba, means "Red Horse". Reiji's surname is similar to that of Seto Kaiba ( Kaiba Seto) from the original Yu-Gi-Oh! manga, whose name also contains the character 馬 (Uma, Horse), serving as another similarity between the two characters. His given name of Reiji means "Zero Child".

Biography

Background

Reiji was the son of Leo Akaba, a researcher who developed the Solid Vision with mass system. Reiji was a natural born genius, already attending university class when he was a child. He had a good relationship with his father, despite his father's busy schedule as a researcher. To attract his father's attention, Reiji went as far as letting his grades in university to drop by purposely leaving his test papers blank so his father would pay attention to him. However, Leo easily saw through Reiji's intention and teased his son for it, much to the latter's exasperation. Though, as Reiji has hoped, Leo consented to Reiji's wish to spend time with him by taking him out for dinner. During dinner, Leo told him about his project of combining Solid Vision with Duel Monsters, which could discover the possibility to open a divine realm that will enable them to challenge the gods. He then asked Reiji to finish it in his place if something happened to him.[1]

A few years later, tricked by Leo to go to his lab and help finish his research, Reiji learns from his father via monitor that their world is about to be destroyed by the time manipulative effects of Genesis Omega Dragon. As Leo revealed the G.O.D. card was stolen by Yusho and assumed to have used it to sent his son Yuya back in time, he dies telling Reiji to stop Yuya before the transmission ended. Reiji remained in the underground shelter after the World Illusion passed before he was saved by Eve.

Traveling back in time to Maiami City three years before Yuya is to arrive, Reiji promise with his father by establishing the Leo Corporation and introducing Solid Vision for public use. [1] Three months before Yuya arrives, Reiji begins to gather Duelists strong enough to take Yuya down. With assistance from Nico Smiley, Reiji witnesses Shun Kurosaki Dueling Ootomo and decides to recruit him after seeing his skills.[1]

Present

Reiji was first seen in the control room of Leo Corporation, when the sensors detected the summoning of "Odd-Eyes Phantom Dragon". This alerted him to the presence of "Phantom", who he knew was Yuya, and dispatched his special squad to seize him for hacking into the LDS Solid Vision System. However, when Phantom was cornered by Shingo Sawatari, he revealed himself to be Yuto instead, shocking Reiji as he gives Shingo orders to capture Yuto as a possible accomplice of Yuya's.[2] He then worriedly watched Shingo Dueling Yuto and was shocked to see Yuto transform into Yuya .[3] After Yuya defeated Shingo, Reiji ordered his men to move in and capture Yuya before the youth escaped on a paper airplane made from Solid Vision.

Later, back at the Leo Corporation, Reiji debriefs the agents, and tells them that he intends to analyze Pendulum Summon. When alerted to Shun Kurosaki using Solid Vision in an Action Duel against Yuya, Reiji orders the concerned Shingo to stand down as this is a chance opportunity to study Yuya's dueling style. After Yuya sets the Pendulum Scale, Reiji explains Pendulum Monsters to Shingo and Sora and the fundamentals of Pendulum Summon. After Shingo is puzzled by Shun's dueling style, Reiji tells him that the worse Shun's situation gets, the stronger he is. After Shun destroys Yuya's Odd-Eyes Phantom Dragon with his Raidraptor - Blade Burner Falcon, Reiji explains the most dangerous aspect of Pendulum Monsters is that they are sent to the owner's Extra Deck instead of the graveyard. This led to Shun being eventually defeated after Yuya summons his dragon back on the field.

Reiji and Sora manga 7-1

Reiji reveals to Sora that Yuya is a Destiny Factor that will destroy the world.

Reiji later finds Sora sneaking into the mother computer room, revealing he allowed Sora in as he wears special contact lenses that prevented Sora from copying his retinal patterns. When Sora asks about Yuya, Reiji explains their target as the Destiny Factor who will one day destroy the world and that the mother computer predicted it so. But Sora then asks who Reiji really is, explaining that no one knows of Reiji Akaba before three years ago and his sudden rise to power. Reiji refuses to answer any of those questions further and advises Sora to get what he seeks from Yuya while providing him prototype Pendulum Monsters as payment for getting this far, and as a means to gather more data on Yuya.

Reiji manga 9

Reiji telling Shun to not to apologize.

Later, Reiji, Shun, and Shingo watch as Sora begins to duel Yuya. Shingo and Shun wanted to go help capture Yuya, but Reiji orders them to remain. Reiji then kept quiet when Sora lied about him holding his sister hostage, allowing Shun to speak out his mind before Sora's deception is revealed. Once Sora is defeated, Reiji decides to deal with Yuya personally as he retrieves a deck from an excavation site run by his company.

Reiji then reaches Yuya's hideout and reveals himself to be from the same time as Yuya as the two leave Yuzu to Duel at a nearby cavern where Yuya first came to in this time. Reiji proceeds to express his hatred towards Yusho for causing his father's death, which Yuya grimly confirmed. The two then began their Duel, agreeing to have a normal Duel rather than an Action Duel, since Reiji disapproved of Yusho Sakaki's Action Duel, while Eve and Ren watched secretly to find out if Reiji also possesses the Adam Factor. With Reiji overwhelming Yuya to the point he called Yuto and Yuri for help, refusing to accept his opponent's side of the story, their Duel ended in a draw when Yuya learns they are being spied on which Reiji revealing it to be EVE's faction. Ren then appeared, revealing the G.O.D. card is in Eve's possession and confirmed that Reiji also possesses the Adam Factor which they are need to awaken the card's full power.

Relationships

Leo Akaba

Reiji's relationship with his father is a complex one, seeking his attention. When Reiji succeeds, he agrees to aid his father in anyway in his research and complete should something happen him. However, unaware of the full truth, Reiji was horrified when Leo sacrificed himself to ensure his son survived the World Illusion. He takes the promise to his father to prevent Yuya from finding the G.O.D. card seriously.

Yuya Sakaki

The relationship between Yuya and Reiji is one built on the latter's grudge against the former's father and his need to study the former. From Reiji's perspective, calling him the Destiny Factor, Yuya is finishing what Yusho began in their time and seeks to stop him. When Reiji personally duels Yuya, he refuses to listen to the youth's attempts to tell him what actually occurred involving the G.O.D. card. Their duel ended in a stalemate when Yuya's hideout began to cave-in, both learning their possess the Adam Factor as it briefly warped their surroundings during the duel. Although Yuya tends to disagree Reiji methods, he knows that he is a good person at heart and would accept the truth eventually.

Shingo Sawatari and Shun Kurosaki

Two duelists Reiji selected to aid him in hunting down Yuya, personally recruiting Shun.

Sora Shiunin

A duelist that Reiji selected to aid him in hunting down Yuya, Sora was the only LC duelist who questioned Reiji's reasons for them to hunt Yuya down. Reiji used that curiosity to send him after Yuya, even giving him enough knowledge to establish a means to snare Yuya in. It would later turn out that Sora was a sleeper agent for Eve sent to unconsciously spy on Reiji.

Yusho Sakaki

Reiji expressed sheer hated towards Yusho, blaming him for his father's death and the ruination of their time. The hatred was intense enough that Reiji refuses to utilize Action Dueling or listen to Yuya telling him was actually happened involving the World Illusion.

Deck

Canon

Reiji runs a "D/D" Deck focused on Pendulum Summoning.

Reiji's main strategy consists of reducing the DEF of his opponent's monsters to zero and inflicting piercing battle damage with monsters such as "D/D/D Supersight King Zero Maxwell" and "D/D/D Destiny King Zero Laplace". With the aid of cards like "Block Attack" and "00 Rush", those monsters' effects allow Reiji to quickly inflict heavy damage to his opponent, while repeatedly reviving his monsters by Pendulum Summoning them back if they get destroyed.

Most of Reiji's manga cards have a "zero" theme. This is a reference to Reiji's name, which is written with the character for "zero" (零 Rei).
