A Lingering Effect ( (ざん) (ぞん) (こう) () Zanzon Kōka) is any effect that applies even if the card is no longer on the field. Unlike most activated effects, some lingering effects do not activate, though they may still apply their effects at or during a specifically stated time. As such, a lingering effect must state the instance or the period of time in which the effect does apply as well as when it will cease to apply.

Lingering effects cannot be negated, but negating the activation or effect of the effect that precedes it, invalidates the lingering effect that follows. Alternatively, a lingering effect that is written as part of the preceding effect, also, cannot be negated. For example: "... from your hand to the Graveyard; this turn, each time your opponent Special Summons a monster(s), immediately draw 1 card." As the words, "this turn" indicates that the effect applies both during and after the effect resolves, the lingering effect is written as part of the preceding effect but still cannot be negated, though the activation of that effect can be.

And some lingering effects may even apply in between the resolve of subsequent chain links. For instance, if an effect is activated as chain link 2 or higher, and either contains or is followed by the lingering effect that states "Immediately after this effect resolves," the lingering effect applies immediately after chain link 2 resolves but immediately before the resolve of the effect that was activated as chain link 1.

One type of card which often has a "lingering" effect are the Monster Tokens. Tokens are not Effect Monsters and they do not have any effects of their own; rather, the "effects" of Monster Tokens are actually the lingering effect of the Spell, Trap or Effect Monster that Summoned it, and the tokens are always treated as normal monsters.

These effects, however, are listed as effect(s) of the Monster Tokens in video games to make their purposes less confusing.

Once applied, a Lingering Effect cannot be negated. For example, if "Limiter Removal" affects a monster, and that monster later becomes unaffected by card effects (e.g. due to the effect of "Number 81: Superdreadnought Rail Cannon Super Dora"), it will still be destroyed during the End Phase.
