When you Destroy a Card, it is removed from the field and, unless specified otherwise, sent to the Graveyard. Monsters Tributed for a Tribute Summon are not considered Destroyed.
Most cards removing Spell and Trap Cards from the field will destroy them, except for a few like Giant Trunade. In that case, cards are returned to the hand of the players, and in case of an effect, for example Toon World, where Toon Monsters are destroyed when Toon World is destroyed, the Toon Monsters are unaffected by the card effect.
Note that there is a difference between Destroying a card, and simply 'sending' it to the Graveyard. For example, Woodland Sprite's effect.
