    • "Mara" also is the name for a specter or wraith-like creature in Germanic and particularly Scandinavian folklore, thought to cause nightmares.
  • Mara is the god of death in the story of how Gautama becomes Buddha, who is sitting under a fig tree trying to achieve enlightenment. Mara is afraid that Gautama might succeed and tries to scare him off, but fails.
