• "Apophis" was the Greek name of a demon in Egyptian mythology, "Apep". Depicted as a massive serpent, "Apep" was considered the personification of chaos. The Ancient Egyptians believed that Ra, the sun god, battled "Apep" at the end of each day, before returning to the east in the morning. Natural phenomenon like earthquakes and solar eclipses were believed to be moments when "Apep" temporarily overwhelmed Ra, plunging the world into chaos until the sun god freed himself from the serpent.
