  • This card can be used in:
    • Necrofear Return decks; "Dark Necrofear", "Dark Mimic LV3", "Sangan" and "Newdoria" are just a few of the mentionable fiend cards that work while Skill Drain is active on the field.
    • Bushi decks; many of their most common monsters, such as "Exiled Force", "Fire Trooper" and "The Immortal Bushi" are not affected by "Skill Drain".
    • "Vehicroid" decks that Special Summon "Super Vehicroid Jumbo Drill" with "Vehicroid Connection Zone"; "Jumbo Drill" will be unaffected by this card due to "Connection Zone" giving "Jumbo Drill" protection from negation.
    • "Dark World" decks; most of their monsters' effects activate in the Graveyard. However, many of their more potent effects activate on the field, and will be blocked by this card.
    • "Gusto" decks, to counter almost any disruption strategy your opponent may utilize. The downside of using this card is it also negate your own in-field card effects such as "Caam, Serenity of Gusto" and "Kamui, Hope of Gusto".
    • "Phantasm Spiral" decks since the deck only plays Normal monsters.
    • "The Weather" decks; The Weather monster's effects, granted by their respective spells & traps canvas requires them to banish themselves as a cost for the activation, wich makes their effects resolve on the Banished Zone, making them immune to Skill Drain, they can also chain their own respective effects along with a canvas effect so those effects also resolve outside of the field.
  • This can be used to allow Toon Monsters to attack during the turn they're Summoned. As this card only affects monsters on the field, they can be Summoned even if this card is active.
  • This is one of very few cards that can stop the Red-Eyes/Beelze Loop. When your opponent activates a card effect that inflicts Burn damage, activate "Skill Drain". While "Beelze of the Diabolic Dragons" will become destructible, you will be spared any further loss of your Life Points, as "Red-Eyes Flare Metal Dragon" will be unable to activate its effect.
  • This card can absolutely cripple decks that rely on Spell Counters. Many effect monsters that use Spell Counters are able to destroy Spell or Trap cards, and because of this, Spell Counter decks usually do not have Trap or Spell destruction cards.
  • Combine this with "Tyrant's Tirade" to block activations of abilities on the field (total field lockdown), as well as those in the hand, giving an almost total lockdown on all abilities. Adding "Soul Drain" should make nearly every monster effect in the game useless (since nothing will activate in the Graveyard).
