OCG Rulings[]
- The effect to send itself to the Graveyard during the End Phase in which this card is Special Summoned starts a chain.[1]
- The effect that activates when the opponent Normal Summons or Special Summons a monster in Attack Position is a Trigger Effect, the 2000 ATK reduction occurs at resolution, and it does not target.[1]
- The ATK reduction lasts as long as the monster that had its ATK reduced remains face-up on the field.[1]
- If a monster with 2000 ATK or less is Normal or Special Summoned in face-up Attack Position and the effect of "Slifer the Sky Dragon" is activated, the effect of "Stardust Dragon" cannot be activated.[2]
- Even if "The Wicked Avatar" is affected by the effect of "Slifer the Sky Dragon", the effect of "The Wicked Avatar" that makes its ATK 100 points higher than the highest ATK on the field is applied immediately. Therefore, it is not destroyed by the effect of "Slifer the Sky Dragon".[3]
- Even when a monster whose original ATK is 0, the effect of "Slifer the Sky Dragon" activates. However, since its impossible to reduce the ATK of the monster with the effect of "Slifer the Sky Dragon" that reduces the ATK by 2000, the monster is not destroyed.[4]
- If the player that controls "Slifer the Sky Dragon" has 2 cards in their hand, so that "Slifer the Sky Dragon" has 2000 ATK, and the effect of "Blackwing - Gale the Whirlwind" that halves the ATK and DEF of the targeted monster is activated, the ATK of "Slifer the Sky Dragon" becomes 1000. Afterwards, if the number of cards in the hand of the player that controls "Slifer the Sky Dragon" varies, the ATK remains at 1000.[5]
- If multiple monsters are Summoned in face-up Attack Position, the effect of "Slifer the Sky Dragon" will activate. Furthermore, the ATK of all of the Summoned monsters is reduced by 2000, and those whose ATK becomes 0 are destroyed.[6]
- If you control 2 copies of "Slifer the Sky Dragon" and the opponent Normal or Special Summons a monster, both copies of "Slifer the Sky Dragon" will activate their effects.
- For example, if the opponent Summons "Blue-Eyes White Dragon" in face-up Attack Position, the effect of each "Slifer the Sky Dragon" are activated as chain 1 and 2 respectively, and the end result is that the ATK is reduced to 0 and "Blue-Eyes White Dragon" is destroyed.[7]
- If the monster Summoned by the opponent is flipped to face-down Defense Position, its ATK is not reduced by 2000 by the effect of "Slifer the Sky Dragon". Also, even if the face-down Defense Position monster had 2000 ATK or less, since its ATK is not reduced by the effect of "Slifer the Sky Dragon", it is not destroyed.[8]
- If at the time of the resolution of the effect of "Slifer the Sky Dragon" that reduces ATK by 2000 the opponent's Summoned monster switches control to your side of the field, the ATK is reduced by 2000, and if the ATK becomes 0, the monster is destroyed.[9]
- If "Slifer the Sky Dragon" is targeted by "Shrink", after its ATK becomes half of its original ATK, its effect that causes its ATK to become the number of cards in your hand x 1000 is applied once again, and the ATK ends up being the number of cards in your hand x 1000. Also, even after the effect of "Shrink" wears out, the ATK is still the number of cards in your hand x 1000. Furthermore, even if the number of cards in your hand varies, the ATK varies according to the number of cards in your hand.[10]
- When your opponent Normal Summons or Special Summons a monster with 4000 ATK, the effect of "The Wicked Dreadroot" is applied immediately, making the Summoned monster's ATK 2000, and then the effect of "Slifer the Sky Dragon" activates, reducing the ATK of that monster by 2000. Therefore, the end result is that the Summoned monster's ATK becomes 0, and it is destroyed by the effect of "Slifer the Sky Dragon".[11]
- If your "Slifer the Sky Dragon" and other opponent's monsters are Special Summoned simultaneously by the effect of "Dimension Fusion", the effect of "Slifer the Sky Dragon" does not activate.[12]
- If a monster Special Summoned in Defense Position is immediately changed to Attack Position by the effect of "Final Attack Orders", it is considered to be in face-up Attack Position at the time of the Summon being successful. Therefore, the effect of "Slifer the Sky Dragon" will activate.[13]
- You can Tribute Summon "Slifer the Sky Dragon" or "The Wicked Dreadroot" from your hand by tributing an opponent's monster affected with "Soul Exchange".[14]

On Effects Not Activating[]
- If "Sangan" is Tributed for a Tribute Summon, then its effect activates "When the monster is successfully Tribute Summoned". However, the effects of Spell Cards, Trap Cards, and Effect Monsters do not activate when "Obelisk the Tormentor" or "The Winged Dragon of Ra" is successfully Tribute Summoned, so the effect of "Sangan" does not activate.[15]
- When "Obelisk the Tormentor" or "The Winged Dragon of Ra" is successfully Tribute Summoned, neither player may activate the effects of Spell Cards, Trap Cards, or Effect Monsters. When "Obelisk the Tormentor" is successfully Summoned, its effect is applied nothing can be done. Afterwards, the Turn Player may Synchro Summon, etc. Also, for "The Winged Dragon of Ra", you may activate its effect when it is successfully Summoned.[16]
- When "Obelisk the Tormentor" is Summoned by "Ultimate Offering" by Tributing "Sangan",[17]
- If "Ultimate Offering" is Chain Link 1, then when the Chain finishes resolving, the last thing to resolve is the Normal Summon of "Obelisk the Tormentor". Thus, the effect of "Sangan" will not activate.
- If "Ultimate Offering" is Chain Link 2, then when the Chain finishes resolving, the last thing to resolve is not the Normal Summon of "Obelisk the Tormentor". Thus, the effect of "Obelisk the Tormentor" is not applied, so the effect of "Sangan" will activate.
- If you activate "Ultimate Offering" to Tribute Summon "Obelisk the Tormentor" and the opponent Chains "Raigeki Break" to destroy "Sangan", then "Sangan" is destroyed at Chain Link 2 and "Obelisk the Tormentor" is Tribute Summoned at Chain Link 1. Normally, the effect of "Sangan" will begin a new Chain after the current one resolves. However, when you finish resolving the Chain, the last thing to resolve is the Tribute Summon of "Obelisk the Tormentor", so the effect of "Obelisk the Tormentor" is applied and the effect of "Sangan" does not activate.[18]
On Summoning[]
- When Tribute Summoning "Obelisk the Tormentor", you cannot choose to Set it in face-down Defense Position.[19]
Miscellaneous[]
- You can declare "Divine-Beast" for the effect of "DNA Surgery", since "Obelisk the Tormentor" and "The Winged Dragon of Ra" are Divine-Beast-Type monsters. In this case, all monsters on the field will be treated as Divine-Beast-Type monsters.[20]
