OCG Rulings

  • Players must pay 1000 Life Points as a cost whenever they wish to Normal or Special Summon (in addition to all other costs).[1]
  • If players Special Summons a monster because of a card effect, they must pay 1000 Life Points when resolving the effect.[1]

Previously Official Rulings

  • If you Normal Summon a monster from your hand, or Special Summon a monster with an "inherent" Special Summon effect ("Cyber Dragon", etc.), first you pay 1000 Life Points and then Normal Summon/Special Summon the monster. If you Special Summon a monster from your hand by using a card effect ("Green Baboon, Defender of the Forest", etc.), you pay 1000 Life Points when the effect resolves.
  • If you Special Summon "Grinder Golem", you only pay 1000 Life Points, because the "Grinder Tokens" are not Special Summoned from your hand.
  • If there are 2 face-up "Queen of Thorns", players must pay 2000 Life Points to Normal or Special Summon a non-Plant-Type monster from their hand.
