This card's OCG and TCG rulings contradict each other.
Differences |
TCG Rulings[]
Judge Program Forum Rulings[]
These Ruling(s) have not been confirmed as applicable to the TCG.[Notes 1] |
- Battle Fader: "Battle Fader" has a Trigger effect and must be activated as soon as the Trigger condition occurs.
- For example, Player A (the turn player) controls a face-up "Light and Darkness Dragon while Player B has a Set "Mirror Force" and "Battle Fader" in their hand. Player A declares an attack. Since "Battle Fader" has a "Trigger Effect" it must be activated directly to the Chain in respond to the attack as Chain Link 1. If Player B activates "Mirror Force" first then he will not be able to activate later "Battle Fader". So, "Battle Fader" will have to be Chain link 1. The effect of "Light and Darkness Dragon" will be Chain link 2. Player B may then activate "Mirror Force" as Chain link 3.[1][2]
- Spirit Reaper: The effect of "Spirit Reaper" that keeps it from being destroyed as a result of battle is a Continuous Effect and does not use the Chain.[3] The effect of "Light and Darkness Dragon" will not be able to negate it.[4]
OCG Rulings[]
- "Cannot be Special Summoned." is not treated as an effect.[5]
On Having Multiple Attributes[]
- The "While face-up on the field, this card is also DARK-Attribute." effect is a Continuous Effect.[5]
- Ally of Justice Catastor: The effect of "Ally of Justice Catastor" will activate when it battles a monster with multiple Attributes, such as "Dark Simorgh" or "Light and Darkness Dragon". If "Light and Darkness Dragon" negates this effect, then damage calculation if performed as usual.[6]
- Consecrated Light: Since "Light and Darkness Dragon" is not treated as a DARK monster while it is in your hand, you can Normal Summon it even if "Consecrated Light" is on the field. However, since it is treated as a DARK monster when you Summon it, you cannot declare an attack with "Light and Darkness Dragon".[7]
- Gozen Match: "Dark Simorgh", "Elemental Mistress Doriado" and "Light and Darkness Dragon" will always be sent to the Graveyard by "Gozen Match". However, since they only have one Attribute while in the hand or Graveyard or while face-down on the field, they can still be Normal/Special/Flip Summoned. However, they will be immediately be sent to the Graveyard.[8]
- Light End Dragon: You can use a card with multiple Attributes, like "Light and Darkness Dragon" or "Sphere of Chaos", as a Synchro Material Monster for the Synchro Summon of "Light End Dragon".[9]
- Vylon Disigma: If "Vylon Disigma" is equipped with multiple monsters by its own effect, when it battles with a monster with the same Attribute as the Equip Cards, the effect is activated. Also, if it battles "Light and Darkness Dragon", by having either a LIGHT or DARK monster equipped, the effect is activated.[10]
On Negating Activations[]
- The "Once per Chain, during either player's turn, when a Spell Card, Trap Card, or monster effect is activated: This card loses exactly 500 ATK and DEF and that activation is negated." effect is a Quick Effect. (It must be always activated in a chain to the activation of a Spell Card, Trap Card or monster effect. It is activated even during the Damage Step. It does not target.)[5]
- "Once per Chain, during either player's turn, when a Spell Card, Trap Card, or monster effect is activated: This card loses exactly 500 ATK and DEF and that activation is negated." effect can only be activated once per chain.[11] Therefore, "Light and Darkness Dragon" will not try to negate itself.[12]
- When the effect of "Light and Darkness Dragon" resolves, if "Light and Darkness Dragon" is no longer on the field, then the "This card loses exactly 500 ATK and DEF and that activation is negated." effect is not applied.[13]
- If "Light and Darkness Dragon" negates a "Once per turn" effect like "Destiny HERO - Diamond Dude", since you already activated the effect, you cannot activate it again during the same turn.[14]
- If you Tribute Summon "Light and Darkness Dragon" by Tributing "Sangan" and "Dandylion", after you choose in which order to place their effects in a Chain, "Light and Darkness Dragon" will activate its effect as Chain Link 3. Therefore, the effect activated as Chain Link 2 will be negated by "Light and Darkness Dragon".[15]
- When "Light and Darkness Dragon" is flipped face-down or leaves the field, its ATK and DEF are no longer reduced. The ATK and DEF are not reduced even if "Light and Darkness Dragon" returns to the field.[16]
- If you control 2 copies of "Light and Darkness Dragon" and a Spell Card, Trap Card, or monster effect is activated, you can choose in which order to place their effects in a Chain. When the effects resolve, the effect of the "Light and Darkness Dragon" activated as Chain Link 3 won't be applied since it was not activated directly in a Chain to the effect activated as Chain Link 1, and it won't lose ATK or DEF. Also, the effect of "Light and Darkness Dragon" can only be activated once per Chain.[17]
- If the activation of a Continuous Spell Card, Continuous Trap Card or a card that remains on the field like "Swords of Revealing Light" is negated by the effect of "Light and Darkness Dragon", those cards are sent to the Graveyard.[18]
- The effect of "Light and Darkness Dragon" only activates when a Spell/Trap Card is activated from the hand or flipped face-up. It cannot be activated when the effect of a Continuous Spell Card, Continuous Trap Card, "Ojamagic" or a Spell Card sent to the Graveyard by "Destiny HERO - Diamond Dude" are activated.[19]
- "Once per Chain, during either player's turn, when a Spell Card, Trap Card, or monster effect is activated: This card loses exactly 500 ATK and DEF and that activation is negated." effect will be activated even if "Light and Darkness Dragon" has less than 500 ATK and DEF. However, since it cannot lose 500 ATK and DEF, the effect is not applied.[20]
- "Light and Darkness Dragon" will also negate the effect of a monster which activates in the hand. The monster will not be sent to the Graveyard.
- If the effect of "Gorz the Emissary of Darkness" is negated, then its effect to Special Summon itself cannot be activated again, unless you take damage for a second time.
- If "Kuriboh" or "Thunder Dragon" has its effect negated by "Light and Darkness Dragon", since they were discarded as a cost, they are not returned to the hand.[21]
- Airknight Parshath: If "Airknight Parshath" destroys "Light and Darkness Dragon" by battle and inflicts battle damage, the "When this card inflicts battle damage to your opponent: Draw 1 card." and the "Once per Chain, during either player's turn, when a Spell Card, Trap Card, or monster effect is activated: This card loses exactly 500 ATK and DEF and that activation is negated." effect of "Light and Darkness Dragon" activates in a Chain. However, since "Light and Darkness Dragon" cannot reduce its ATK and DEF by 500, the effect is not applied. Therefore, the effect of "Airknight Parshath" is applied normally.[22]
- Angel O7: "Angel O7" will prevent the activation of the mandatory effects of "Light and Darkness Dragon".[23]
- Bahamut Shark: If the activation of the effect of "Bahamut Shark" is negated by the effect of "Light and Darkness Dragon", that "Bahamut Shark" can attack during the same turn. Also, if the effect of "Bahamut Shark" is negated as a result of "Skill Drain" being activated in a Chain to its activation, that "Bahamut Shark" can attack during the same turn. Furthermore, if "Skill Drain" is applied after an Xyz Monster has been Special Summoned by the effect of "Bahamut Shark", that "Bahamut Shark" cannot attack during the same turn.[24]
- Black Luster Soldier - Envoy of the Beginning: If the activation of the "Target 1 monster on the field; banish that target face-up." effect of "Black Luster Soldier - Envoy of the Beginning" is negated by the effect of "Light and Darkness Dragon", that "Black Luster Soldier - Envoy of the Beginning" can attack during the same turn.[25]
- Cardcar D: If the effect of "Cardcar D" is negated by the effect of "Light and Darkness Dragon", then you can Special Summon other monsters during the same turn.[26]
- Chaos Emperor Dragon - Envoy of the End: If the activation of the effect of "Card Trooper" or "Monster Reborn" is negated by your opponent's "Light and Darkness Dragon", you can activate the effect of "Chaos Emperor Dragon - Envoy of the End" during the same turn. If the effect of "Card Trooper" or "Monster Reborn" is negated by your opponent's "The Fabled Unicore", you cannot activate the effect of "Chaos Emperor Dragon - Envoy of the End" during the same turn.[27]
- Constellar Belt: If "Honest" activates its effect on the field, the effect of "Light and Darkness Dragon" activates mandatorily, but since the effect of "Constellar Belt" is being applied, the activation of the effect of "Honest" is not negated and it returns from the field to the hand. Also, since "Light and Darkness Dragon" could not apply its effect, it does not lose 500 ATK and DEF.[28]
- Doomcaliber Knight: When 1 "Light and Darkness Dragon" and 1 "Doomcaliber Knight" are on the field, if a Spell/Trap Card is activated, then "Light and Darkness Dragon" will be Chain Link 2, and "Doomcaliber Knight" will be Chain Link 3. The effect of "Light and Darkness Dragon" can only be activated once per Chain, so "Light and Darkness Dragon" will not try to negate "Doomcaliber Knight".[29]
- Drill Warrior: If the activation of the effect of "Drill Warrior" which Special Summons it during the Standby Phase is negated by the effect of "Light and Darkness Dragon", then you cannot activate the effect of "Drill Warrior" again during the same Standby Phase. Therefore, "Drill Warrior" remains banished.[30]
- Evilswarm Exciton Knight: If the effect of "Evilswarm Exciton Knight" is negated by "Skill Drain" or the effect of "Light and Darkness Dragon", the "your opponent takes no further damage this turn" effect is not applied.[31]
- Evilswarm Ouroboros: If the selected effect cannot be applied when the effect of "Evilswarm Ouroboros" resolves, the selected effect cannot be activated again. Also, even if the activation of the effect of "Evilswarm Ouroboros" is negated by "Light and Darkness Dragon", the selected effect cannot be activated again. Furthermore, even if the effect of "Evilswarm Ouroboros" is negated by "Skill Drain", the selected effect cannot be activated again.[32]
- Fire King High Avatar Garunix: If the effect of "Fire King High Avatar Garunix" activates during the Standby Phase but has its activation negated by "Divine Wrath" or "Light and Darkness Dragon", then you cannot activate the effect of "Fire King High Avatar Garunix" again during the same Standby Phase.[33]
- Forbidden Chalice: While "Light and Darkness Dragon" has 800 ATK and 400 DEF, if "Forbidden Chalice" is activated and targets "Light and Darkness Dragon", then "Light and Darkness Dragon" cannot lower its DEF by 500 so its effect will not negate "Forbidden Chalice". When "Forbidden Chalice" resolves, the effect of "Light and Darkness Dragon" is negated and it returns to 2800 ATK and 2400 DEF, and then the effect of "Forbidden Chalice" adds 400 ATK. When you stop applying the effect of "Forbidden Chalice" during the End Phase, "Light and Darkness Dragon" will have 2800 ATK and 2400 DEF.[34]
- Geartown: When the effect of "Light and Darkness Dragon" negates the activation of a Spell or Trap Card, that Spell/Trap Card is sent to the Graveyard. This is not treated as being destroyed. Therefore, if the activation of "Geartown" is negated by the effect of "Light and Darkness Dragon", since "Geartown" was not destroyed, you cannot activate its effects.[35]
- Hot Red Dragon Archfiend: If the activation of the effect of "Hot Red Dragon Archfiend" is negated by "Light and Darkness Dragon", other monsters can attack during the same turn. Also, if the effect of "Hot Red Dragon Archfiend" is negated as a result of "Skill Drain" being activated in a Chain to its activation, since the activation itself took place, other monsters cannot attack this turn.[36]
- Luminous Spark: The effect of "Light and Darkness Dragon" will activate even if the ATK and DEF are changed by a card effect. If you use the effect of "Light and Darkness Dragon" 4 times while "Luminous Spark" is face-up on the field, then "Light and Darkness Dragon" will have 1300 ATK and 0 DEF. After that, if "Luminous Spark" leaves the field, the ATK and DEF of "Light and Darkness Dragon" is recalculated and it becomes 800 ATK and 400 DEF.[37]
- Meklord Emperor Granel: If the effect of "Meklord Emperor Granel" that Special Summons 1 Equip Card has its activation negated by the effect of "Light and Darkness Dragon", then you can activate the effect of "Meklord Emperor Granel" again during the same turn.[38]
- Metaion, the Timelord: At the end of the Battle Phase, when the effect of "Metaion, the Timelord" activates, if "Divine Wrath" or "Light and Darkness Dragon" negate the activation of that effect, "Metaion, the Timelord" will not activate that effect again during the same Battle Phase.[39]
- Naturia Spiderfang: If the only Spell/Trap Card activated during the turn was negated by a card like "Light and Darkness Dragon", then "Naturia Spiderfang" cannot attack.[40]
- Number 9: Dyson Sphere: If the activation of the "Once per Battle Step, during your opponent's turn, if this card with Xyz Material is attacked: Negate the attack" effect of "Number 9: Dyson Sphere" is negated by the effect of "Light and Darkness Dragon", that effect of "Number 9: Dyson Sphere" cannot be activated again during the same Battle Step. (During the same Battle Phase, if another monster targets "Number 9: Dyson Sphere" for an attack, that effect of "Number 9: Dyson Sphere" can be activated during the Battle Step.)[41]
- Number 11: Big Eye: If "Light and Darkness Dragon" negates the activation of the effect of "Number 11: Big Eye", then you can attack with "Number 11: Big Eye" during that turn.[42]
- Number 39: Utopia: If the effect of "Number 39: Utopia" that destroys itself has its activation negated by "Light and Darkness Dragon" or "Justice Bringer", then the effect of "Number 39: Utopia" cannot activate again during the same battle.[43]
- Number 72: Shogi Rook: If the activation of the effect of "Number 72: Shogi Rook" is negated by "Light and Darkness Dragon", battle damage that your opponent takes that turn is not halved. Also, if the effect of "Number 72: Shogi Rook" is negated as a result of "Skill Drain" being activated in a Chain to its activation, battle damage that your opponent takes that turn is still not halved.[44]
- Rank-Up-Magic - The Seventh One: Even if the activation of "Rank-Up-Magic - The Seventh One" is negated by "Light and Darkness Dragon", or the effect is negated by "Silent Swordsman LV7", "Rank-Up-Magic - The Seventh One" can be activated once again during the same Duel. The effect of "Rank-Up-Magic - The Seventh One" can only be applied once per Duel.[45]
- Reverse Trap: If the effect of "Reverse Trap" is being applied, the effect of "Light and Darkness Dragon" that negates the activation will only activate once time. When it does, it will gain 500 ATK and DEF. Afterwards, if during the same turn another Spell Card, Trap Card, or monster effect is activated, "Light and Darkness Dragon" effect won't activate.[46]
- Shooting Star Dragon: The effect that Special Summons "Shooting Star Dragon" during the End Phase can only be activated once during the End Phase. Therefore, if the activation of the effect is negated by the effect of "Light and Darkness Dragon", then the effect cannot be activated again during the same End Phase.[47]
- Shopina the Melodious Maestra: The effect of "Light and Darkness Dragon" cannot be activated during a turn in which you already activated the effect of "Shopina the Melodious Maestra". Also, if you activate the effect of "Shopina the Melodious Maestra", the effect of "Light and Darkness Dragon" will not activate in a chain.[48]
- Splendid Venus: If "Splendid Venus" is on the field, the effect of "Light and Darkness Dragon will activate mandatorily, but the card will not be negated and "Light and Darkness Dragon" will not lose 500 ATK and DEF.[49]
- Super Polymerization: When "Super Polymerization" is activated, cards and effects cannot be activated in response to its activation. Therefore, the effect of "Light and Darkness Dragon" cannot be activated in a Chain to "Super Polymerization".[50]
- Triple Star Trion: If the effect of "Triple Star Trion" activates during the End Phase but has its activation negated by "Light and Darkness Dragon", then you cannot activate the effect of "Triple Star Trion" again during the same End Phase.[51]
On Destroying and Special Summoning[]
- The "When this card is destroyed and sent to the Graveyard: Target 1 monster in your Graveyard (if possible); destroy all cards you control, also Special Summon that monster (if any)." effect is a Trigger Effect that is activated from the Graveyard. (It is a mandatory effect. It targets. Destroying and Special Summoning are not considered to happen simultaneously.)[5]
- When the effect of "Light and Darkness Dragon" resolves, if all of your Monster Card Zones are unusable because a card like "Ground Collapse", then you cannot Special Summon any monster from your Graveyard. However, even if you cannot Special Summon any monster, all cards you control are still destroyed.[52]
- When the effect of "Light and Darkness Dragon" resolves, if the targeted monster is no longer in the Graveyard, then you cannot Special Summon it. However, even if you cannot Special Summon it, all cards you control are still destroyed.[53]
- When the effect of "Light and Darkness Dragon" resolves, even if you control no cards, you still Special Summon the monster from your Graveyard.[54]
- The effect of "Light and Darkness Dragon" can be activated even if it is destroyed while in the hand or Deck.[55]
- If "Light and Darkness Dragon" is destroyed and sent to the Graveyard while it is being treated as an Equip Card, then you can activate its effect.
- Suppose that you have "Dragunity Arma Leyvaten" equipped with "Light and Darkness Dragon", and "Dragunity Arma Leyvaten" is destroyed by an opponent's card's effect. "Light and Darkness Dragon" is destroyed and sent to the Graveyard, so its effect activates, and you can Special Summon the "Dragunity Arma Leyvaten" that is in your Graveyard. Furthermore, the effect of "Dragunity Arma Leyvaten" activates, and you can treat that "Light and Darkness Dragon" in your Graveyard as an Equip Card.[56]
- Koa'ki Meiru Drago: While you or your opponent's control "Koa'ki Meiru Drago", if you have an EARTH and a LIGHT monster in your Graveyard, you can target either the LIGHT monster or the EARTH monster with the effect of "Light and Darkness Dragon".
- If you control "Koa'ki Meiru Drago" and you target the LIGHT monster, since "Koa'ki Meiru Drago" is first destroyed and then the targeted monster is Special Summoned, the targeted monster is Special Summoned as usual.
- If the opponent controls "Koa'ki Meiru Drago" and you target the LIGHT monster, since the effect of "Koa'ki Meiru Drago" is still being applied when the effect of "Light and Darkness Dragon" resolves, all cards you control are destroyed, but the targeted monster is not Special Summoned.[57]
- Peten the Dark Clown: The effect of "Peten the Dark Clown" can only be activated when it is sent to the Graveyard. Therefore, it cannot be activated when it is sent to the Graveyard while another card effect is resolving. When the effect of "Light and Darkness Dragon" is activated, you first destroy all cards you control, and then you Special Summon the targeted monster. Since they are not considered to happen simultaneously, you cannot activate the effect of "Peten the Dark Clown".[58]
Mentions In Other Rulings[]
- The Tyrant Neptune: The ATK of "The Tyrant Neptune" is increased by the total ATK of the Tributed monsters and the DEF of "The Tyrant Neptune" is increased by the total DEF of the Tributed monsters. You do not increase the ATK by the combined ATK and DEF.
- Example #2: "Sangan" (1000 ATK / 600 DEF) and "Light and Darkness Dragon" (2800 ATK / 2400 DEF) are Tributed for "The Tyrant Neptune". The ATK of "The Tyrant Neptune" increases by 3800, and the DEF increases by 3000. (You do not increase the ATK and DEF by 6800 each.)[59]
Previously Official Rulings[]
These TCG rulings were issued by Upper Deck Entertainment and have since been deemed unofficial by Konami.[61] They were previously considered official and can still be correct, as long as they follow the official gameplay rules, or unless Konami has issued a ruling that says otherwise. References: [62][63][64][65][66][67][68][69][70] |
- “Light and Darkness Dragon's” first effect is a Continuous Effect that makes its Attributes both LIGHT and DARK while it is face-up on the field.
- “Light and Darkness Dragon's” second effect that negates the activation of Spell, Trap, and the effects of Effect Monsters is a Quick Effect. “Light and Darkness Dragon” loses 500 ATK and DEF when its effect is resolved, after negating the activation of the Spell, Trap, or effect of the Effect Monster. This effect can be activated during the Damage Step.
- “Light and Darkness Dragon's” second effect can only activate once during the Chain. If a Spell, Trap, or effect of an Effect Monster is chained to the second effect of “Light and Darkness Dragon”, “Light and Darkness Dragon’s” second effect will not activate again in that same Chain.
- If the ATK and DEF of “Light and Darkness Dragon” are less than 500 when a Spell, Trap, or effect of an Effect Monster is activated, the second effect of “Light and Darkness Dragon” will still activate but when it resolves it will not negate the activation of the Spell, Trap, or effect of the Effect Monster because its ATK and DEF cannot be reduced by 500.
- The ATK and DEF lost by “Light and Darkness Dragon” from its second effect is applied to its total ATK, including all other gains and losses of ATK and/or DEF. Example: If you use the second effect of “Light and Darkness Dragon” 4 times (500 X 4 = 2000 loss of ATK and DEF) while “Luminous Spark” is face-up on the Field Spell Card Zone, the “Light and Darkness Dragon” will have 1300 ATK and 0 DEF. If “Luminous Spark” is then removed from the field or negated, the “Light and Darkness Dragon’s” would change to 800 ATK and 400 DEF.
- If “Shrink” is used to halve the original ATK of “Light and Darkness Dragon”, the original ATK of “Light and Darkness Dragon” is halved to create a new current ATK and then the ATK and DEF lost by the effect of “Light and Darkness Dragon” is reapplied. Example: If you use the second effect of “Light and Darkness Dragon” twice (500 X 2 = 1000 lost ATK and DEF) and “Shrink” is used to halve the original ATK of “Light and Darkness Dragon”, the effect of “Shrink” is applied (2800 / 2 = 1400 ATK) and then “Light and Darkness Dragon’s” ATK is reduced by 1000 (1400 – 1000 = 400) for a total of 400 ATK and 1400 DEF. When the effect of “Shrink” is no longer applied (because the turn had ended, etc.), reapply the lost ATK and DEF to the “Light and Darkness Dragon’s” original ATK of 2800. (In our example, the values would be 1800 ATK and 1400 DEF)
- “Light and Darkness Dragon's” third effect is a Trigger Effect that activates whenever “Light and Darkness Dragon” is destroyed and sent to the Graveyard. This effect targets 1 monster in its owner’s Graveyard. When “Light and Darkness Dragon’s” effect is resolved, you will destroy every card you control and then Special Summon the selected monster from your Graveyard.
- If your “Light and Darkness Dragon” is the only card on your side of the field when it is destroyed and sent to your Graveyard, its effect to Special Summon 1 monster from your Graveyard will still activate, even though you control no cards.
- If the monster you select to Special Summon is removed from the Graveyard in Chain (by using “D.D. Crow”, etc.), before resolving the effect of “Light and Darkness Dragon”, the selected monster will not be Special Summoned but you will still destroy every card that you control.
- When “Light and Darkness Dragon” is destroyed and sent to your Graveyard while you have no monsters in your Graveyard that you can Special Summon, the effect of “Light and Darkness Dragon” will not Special Summon a monster but it will still destroy every card you control.
- “Light and Darkness Dragon's” third effect will activate when it is destroyed while in the hand or the Deck and sent to the Graveyard. Example: “Light and Darkness Dragon” is destroyed by “Crush Card Virus” while in the player’s hand.
- If “Light and Darkness Dragon” is removed from the field or flipped face-down, any loses of ATK and DEF from its effect are reset and will not be reapplied when it is returned to the field or flipped face-up.
- If “Light and Darkness Dragon” is Summoned or flipped face-up while “Skill Drain” is active, “Light and Darkness Dragon's” first effect will be negated. Its second effect will still activate whenever a Spell, Trap, or effect of an Effect Monster is activated, but the effect of “Light and Darkness Dragon” will be negated so the activation of the Spell, Trap, or effect of Effect Monster will not be negated and “Light and Darkness Dragon” will not lose ATK or DEF. Its third effect that activates when it is destroyed and sent to the Graveyard will not be negated because this effect activates and resolves while “Light and Darkness Dragon” is not on the field.
- If you cannot Special Summon a monster because of a card’s effect (“Scapegoat”, etc.) when “Light and Darkness Dragon” is destroyed and sent to the Graveyard you will not be able to Special Summon the selected monster but you must still destroy every card that you control.
- If you cannot Special Summon a monster because all of your Monster Card Zones are forbidden (by “Ground Collapse”, “Ojama Knight”, etc.) when your “Light and Darkness Dragon” is destroyed and sent to the Graveyard, the effect of “Light and Darkness Dragon” will not Special Summon a monster but it will still destroy every card that you control.
- “Light and Darkness Dragon” cannot negate the activation of the Ignition-like effect of Continuous Spell or Trap Cards (“Ultimate Offering” [sic], etc.) or Field Spell Cards (“Ancient City - Rainbow Ruins”, etc.). “Light and Darkness Dragon's” second effect activates when a Spell or Trap Card is first activated (placed face-up onto the field or flipped face-up).
- When the effect of a Normal Spell Card is activated in the Graveyard due to the effect of “Destiny Hero - Diamond Dude”, “Light and Darkness Dragon’s” second effect will not activate because the Normal Spell Card is not “activated”.
- When “Light and Darkness Dragon” negates the activation of a Continuous Spell or Trap Card, the Continuous Spell or Trap Card is sent to the Graveyard. When “Light and Darkness Dragon” negates the activation of “Swords of Revealing Light”, the “Swords of Revealing Light” is sent to the Graveyard.
- When the effect of a Spell, Trap, or effect of an Effect Monster is activated while the card is in your hand (“Green Baboon, Defender of the Forest”, etc.), the card will remain in the player’s hand when its activation is negated by “Light and Darkness Dragon”.
- When “Light and Darkness Dragon” negates the activation of a Spell, Trap, or effect of an Effect Monster that can only be activated once per turn (“Blowback Dragon”, etc.), the Spell, Trap, or effect of the Effect Monster cannot be activated again because the Spell, Trap, or effect of the Effect Monster is treated as having been activated during that turn. If the effect of the Effect Monster can be activated multiple times during the same turn (“Treeborn Frog”, etc.), the effect of the Effect Monster can be activated again.
- If you have 2 or more “Light and Darkness Dragon” face-up on your side of the field when a Spell, Trap, or effect of an Effect Monster is activated, the effect of each “Light and Darkness Dragon” form a Chain, but only the effect of the “Light and Darkness Dragon” chained directly to the activated Spell, Trap, or effect of an Effect Monster will resolve. The other “Light and Darkness Dragon” on the Chain will not negate the activation of the Spell, Trap, or effect of the Effect Monster and they will not lose any ATK or DEF from their effect.
Example: Player A and Player B each have “Light and Darkness Dragon” face-up on the field. Player A activates “Smashing Ground” in his Main Phase 1. The effect of both copies of “Light and Darkness Dragon” activate. Player A is the turn player, so theirs is placed first onto the Chain (Light and Darkness Dragon A), followed by their opponent’s (Light and Darkness Dragon B). Since Player A’s “Light and Darkness Dragon” is chained directly to “Smashing Ground”, it will negate the “Smashing Ground” and lose 500 ATK and DEF. Player B’s “Light and Darkness Dragon” will not negate “Smashing Ground” and will not lose ATK or DEF.
- If you Tribute “Sangan” and “Witch of the Black Forest” to Tribute Summon “Light and Darkness Dragon”, the effect of “Sangan” and “Witch of the Black Forest” form a Chain. “Light and Darkness Dragon” will negate the activation of whichever effect is placed second on the Chain.
- If the second effect of “Light and Darkness Dragon” is activated and an effect is chained that removes “Light and Darkness Dragon” from the field or flips it face-down, the effect of “Light and Darkness Dragon” will disappear and the activation of the Spell, Trap, or effect of the Effect Monster will not be negated.
- If “Light and Darkness Dragon” negates the activation of “Twin-Headed Behemoth’s” effect, the effect of “Twin-Headed Behemoth” will not activate again during the Duel.
- If the activation of “Destiny Hero - Dasher's” effect that Special Summons a monster is negated by “Light and Darkness Dragon”, the “Destiny Hero - Dasher” will not be able to activate the effect while it remains in the Graveyard. If it is removed from the Graveyard and then later returned to the Graveyard, it will be able to activate its effect once again.
- When “Light and Darkness Dragon” negates the activation of a Spirit monster's effect that would return it to its owner’s hand, the effect of the Spirit Monster activates again during the same End Phase. When the return effect of the Spirit Monster is activated during the End Phase while “Light and Darkness Dragon” has less than 500 ATK and DEF, the second effect of “Light and Darkness Dragon” will still activate, but it will not be able to negate the activation and the Spirit Monster will return to its owner's hand.
- “Light and Darkness Dragon” will negate the activation of “Serpentine Princess’” effect when the face-up “Serpentine Princess” is sent from the field to the Deck. (“Serpentine Princess” remains in the Deck)
- “Light and Darkness Dragon” will negate the activation of “Mokey Mokey King's” effect that activates when it is removed from the field, even if it is returned to the Fusion Deck.
- If “Light and Darkness Dragon” is destroyed and sent to the Graveyard while being treated as an Equip Card, its third effect that Special Summons 1 monster will activate.
- When a monster is Summoned that has an effect that activates at the time the monster is successfully Summoned (“Zaborg the Thunder Monarch”, “Breaker the Magical Warrior”, etc.) while “Light and Darkness Dragon” is face-up on the field, the effect of the Summoned monster will be Chain Link 1 and “Light and Darkness Dragon” will be Chain Link 2. Because of this, it is not possible to use “Pulling the Rug” to negate the effect of the monster if it was Normal Summoned.
- If “Light and Darkness Dragon” negates the activation of the effect of “Majestic Mech - Ohka” or “Majestic Mech - Goryu” that activate during the End Phase, the effect of the “Majestic Mech - Ohka” or “Majestic Mech - Goryu” will activate again during the same End Phase. If the effect of “Majestic Mech - Ohka” or “Majestic Mech - Goryu” is activated during the End Phase while “Light and Darkness Dragon” has less than 500 ATK and DEF, the second effect of “Light and Darkness Dragon” will still activate, but it will not be able to negate the activation and the “Majestic Mech - Ohka” or “Majestic Mech - Goryu” will be sent to the Graveyard.
- During the turn "Reverse Trap" is activated, "Light and Darkness Dragon's" second effect will only activate 1 time after "Reverse Trap" resolves. When it does, it will gain 500 ATK and DEF instead of losing 500 ATK and DEF. "Light and Darkness Dragon's" second effect will activate normally during following turns, and if it gained 500 ATK and DEF the gained ATK and DEF becomes a loss of 500 ATK and DEF.
Example: Player A activates "Reverse Trap" in his Main Phase 1. Afterwards, he Tribute Summons "Light and Darkness Dragon". Player B activates "Bottomless Trap Hole". "Light and Darkness Dragon's" effect activates, negating "Bottomless Trap Hole" and gaining 500 ATK and DEF.
During the Battle Phase, Player A attacks with "Light and Darkness Dragon". Player B activates "Sakuretsu Armor". "Light and Darkness Dragon's" second effect does not activate and it is destroyed by "Sakuretsu Armor".
Mentions in Other Rulings
- Consecrated Light: You can Summon "Light and Darkness Dragon" while "Consecrated Light" is on the field. Once it is on the field, it will be unable to attack.
- DNA Checkup: If the targeted monster has multiple Attributes, like "Light and Darkness Dragon" you only refer to the Attribute printed on the card when resolving "DNA Checkup".
- Destruction Jammer: "Destruction Jammer" can be chained when "Light and Darkness Dragon's" effect to Special Summon a monster is activated, but not if the owner of "Light and Darkness Dragon" has no monsters on their side of the field.
- Doomcaliber Knight: If "Light and Darkness Dragon" and "Doomcaliber Knight" are face-up on the field when a Spell or Trap Card is activated, "Light and Darkness Dragon's" effect is chained to the Spell or Trap Card and "Doomcaliber Knight's" effect is chained to "Light and Darkness Dragon".
- Gozen Match: Monsters with multiple Attributes, like "Light and Darkness Dragon" are sent to the Graveyard when "Gozen Match" resolves.
- Gozen Match: While "Gozen Match" is face-up on the field, you can Summon monsters with multiple Attributes, such as "Light and Darkness Dragon" or "Elemental Mistress Doriado", but they will be immediately sent to the Graveyard.
- Solemn Judgment: "Solemn Judgment" cannot negate a Special Summon if it results from the activated effect of a monster card, like ... "Light and Darkness Dragon" ....
- Super Polymerization: If "Super Polymerization" is activated while "Light and Darkness Dragon" is face-up on the field, "Light and Darkness Dragon's" effect does not activate.
Judge List Rulings
- "Light and Darkness Dragon" cannot negate the Continous Effects of Monster Cards. These types of effects do not "activate" and do not use the Chain, so there is no opprotunity for "Light and Darkness Dragon" to chain.[60]
- If "Light and Darkness Dragon" was equipped to "Allure Queen LV7" and a monster with higher Attack attacks "Allure Queen LV7", "Light and Darkness Dragon" would be destroyed and sent to the Graveyard. This would activate its third effect. Since the effect activates in the Graveyard, its owner will activate the effect.[60]
- "Light and Darkness Dragon" effect will not activate against the effect of "Amazoness Swords Woman", because this is a Continuous Effect.[60]
- Any ATK or DEF "Light and Darkness Dragon" lost with its effect before "Angel O7" is Tribute Summoned will remain lost. While "Angel O7" remains face-up on the field, "Light and Darkness Dragon's" second and third effects cannot activate.[60]
- If you activate the first effect of "Cyber Valley" when it is attacked by your opponent's "Light and Darkness Dragon", "Cyber Valley" is removed from play as a cost to activate it. "Light and Darkness Dragon's" effect is chained. Since this chain is in response to the attack of "Light and Darkness Dragon", cards that respond to the attack of your opponent's monster can be activated. So it is possible to chain "Mirror Force" to "Light and Darkness Dragon's" effect in this case. "Mirror Force" resolves first and destroys "Light and Darkness Dragon". "Light and Darkness Dragon's" effect disappears. "Cyber Valley's" effect resolves last, letting you draw 1 card and end the Battle Phase ("Light and Darkness Dragon's" third effect will activate at the end of the Battle Phase).[60]
- When you activate "Cyber Valley's" third effect, "Cyber Valley" and 1 card from your hand are not removed from play until "Cyber Valley's" third effect resolve. As such, everytime it is negated by "Light and Darkness Dragon" it will remain in play and you won't lose a card from your hand.[60]
- When "D.D. Warrior Lady" destroys "Light and Darkness Dragon" by battle, "Light and Darkness Dragon's" effect will activate and it will negate "D.D. Warrior Lady's" effect if it has enough ATK and DEF.[60]
- If you activate "Dark Nephthys'" effect from your hand while "Light and Darkness Dragon" is face-up on the field, the two DARK monsters are removed from play to pay the cost for "Dark Nephthys'" Ignition Effect and "Light and Darkness Dragon's" effect is chained. Assuming "Light and Darkness Dragon" has enough ATK & DEF, it negates "Dark Nephthys'" effect. "Dark Nephthys" remains in the hand and isn't placed into the Graveyard until its effect is resolved. Since its effect is negated, it remains in the player's hand.[60]
- When "Destiny Hero - Plasma" activates its effect to Equip the "Light and Darkness Dragon", "Light and Darkness Dragon's" second effect will activate. "Light and Darkness Dragon's" effect will be negated when it resolves, so it will not be able to negate "Destiny Hero - Plasma's" effect. "Destiny Hero - Plasma" will then be equipped with "Light and Darkness Dragon".[60]
- When the Spell Card is activated, "Light and Darkness Dragon" will immediately chain its effect. By doing so, it prevents "Horus the Black Flame Dragon LV8" from chaining with its effect, because Horus must chain to the Spell Card it intends to negate, and that is not possible now.[60]
- When "Kycoo the Ghost Destroyer" attacks a face-up Attack Position "Light and Darkness Dragon" and destroy it by battle, the Trigger Effect [sic?] of "Light and Darkness Dragon" will still activate in response to "Kycoo the Ghost Destroyer's" effect and it will negate Kycoo's effect.[60]
- When "Lyla, Lightsworn Sorceress'" effect is activated, "Light and Darkness Dragon's" effect is chained. Assuming its ATK and DEF are high enough, "Light and Darkness Dragon" will negate "Lyla, Lightsworn Sorceress'" effect. Lyla does not shift into Defense Position or destroy the selected Spell/Trap Card. Since "Lyla, Lightsworn Sorceress" is in Attack Position, it can activate its [sic] again. The process can be repeated until "Light and Darkness Dragon's" ATK and DEF are too low to negate Lyla's effect.[60]
- "Light and Darkness Dragon" will negate "Necro Gardna's" effect.[60]
- If "Necrovalley" is acive [sic] on the field, the entire third effect of "Light and Darkness Dragon" would be negated, so the player would not destroy every card they control or Special Summon the monster targeted in their Graveyard.[60]
- You can chain "Prime Material Dragon's" effect to "Light and Darkness Dragon's" third effect, then "Light and Darkness Dragon" would not destroy its owner's cards and it would not Special Summon the selected monster.[60]
- If "Light and Darkness Dragon" is destroyed during the Damage Step, it would not be possible negate its Special Summon effect with "Royal Oppression". If "Light and Darkness Dragon" is destroyed during any other game phase, it would be possible activate the effect of the "Royal Oppression" to negate "Light and Darkness Dragon's" Special Summon effect. (Remember that both players can use the effect of "Royal Oppression", as stated in its text.)[60]
- When "Light and Darkness Dragon" negates "Ryko, Lightsworn Hunter's" Flip-Effect, the targeted card is not destroyed and the player does not send 3 cards from the top of their Deck.[60]
- If "Light and Darkness Dragon" is Summoned or flipped face-up while "Skill Drain" is active, "Light and Darkness Dragon’s" first effect will be negated. Its second effect will still activate whenever a Spell, Trap, or effect of an Effect Monster is activated, but the effect of "Light and Darkness Dragon" will be negated so the activation of the Spell, Trap, or effect of Effect Monster will not be negated and "Light and Darkness Dragon" will not lose ATK or DEF. Its third effect that activates when it is destroyed and sent to the Graveyard will not be negated because this effect activates and resolves while "Light and Darkness Dragon" is not on the field.[60]
- If the Summon of "Light and Darkness Dragon" is negated by "Solemn Judgment", then "Light and Darkness Dragon's" third effect will activate, because it is destroyed and sent to the Graveyard by "Solemn Judgment".[60]
Out of Date
- If a monster with an optional Trigger Effect, like “Peten the Dark Clown” or “Infernal Dragon”, is destroyed by “Light and Darkness Dragon's” third effect, the timing to activate the effect of the destroyed monster is missed because immediately afterwards a monster is Special Summoned. The last thing to happen when resolving the effect is the Special Summon of a monster and not the destruction of “Peten the Dark Clown” or “Infernal Dragon”.[Out of Date 1]
Mentions in Other Rulings
- Lightsworn: If the effect of a “Lightsworn” monster to send cards from the top of your Deck to your Graveyard during the End Phase is negated by the effect of "Light and Darkness Dragon," that “Lightsworn” monster’s effect activates again in the same End Phase.[Out of Date 2]
Notes[]
- ↑ Konami Judge Program Rulings are considered unverified, as their source(s) are not publicly viewable. They are not confirmed as applicable to the TCG until they have been officially published by Konami.
Out of Date[]
- ↑ This card's latest errata states that the Special Summon and destroying the cards occur simultaneously. Therefore, the effect of "Peten the Dark Clown" and "Infernal Dragon" will not miss the timing.
- ↑ The latest errata of "Lightsworn" monsters state that this effect will only activate once per turn, so it will not activate again in this case.
