OCG Rulings
- You can activate the card "Backfire" at any time except during the Damage Step.[1]
- The effect to inflict damage to your opponent uses a Chain Link.[1]
- This effect will activate when a face-up FIRE-Attribute monster you control is destroyed and sent to the Graveyard. (This effect will not activate when a face-down Defense Position FIRE-Attribute monster you control is destroyed and sent to the Graveyard.)[1]
- While "Backfire" is face-up in your Spell & Trap Zone, its effect will activate even when a FIRE-Attribute monster is destroyed and sent to the Graveyard during the Damage Step. (It will only activate when a face-up FIRE-Attribute monster on the field is destroyed and sent to the Graveyard. Even if a face-down Defense Position monster is destroyed and sent to the Graveyard after being flipped face-up by battle, this effect will activate.)[1]
Previously Official Rulings
These TCG rulings were issued by Upper Deck Entertainment and have since been deemed unofficial by Konami.[2] They were previously considered official and can still be correct, as long as they follow the official gameplay rules, or unless Konami has issued a ruling that says otherwise. - If a monster is FIRE because it is equipped with Scroll of Bewitchment, you cannot activate Backfire's effect when it is sent to the Graveyard because it is no longer equipped when it arrives in the Graveyard.
